Equipment / Uniforms

Skis, Boots, and Poles
For those new to the sport, you will need both classic and skate equipment. This includes classic skis, classic poles, skate skis, and skate poles. Skiers have the option of purchasing separate skate and classic boots, or can go with 'combi' boots, which can be used for both classic and skate skiing. Combi boots are a good pick for those just getting started with the sport, while separate skate and classic boots might be a better option for those who have race experience and want a more specialized feel. Options for purchasing equipment can be found below...

New skiers - It is recommended that individual skiers/families purchase at least one pair of skis for their first year, then, if needed, another pair for the following year.  Please purchase skis for the technique of the year. If needed, the school does have a fairly large stock to borrow from.

Uniforms -
A tradition at Queensbury, skiers have the option of purchasing a home-made race suit.  Early in the season skiers can choose the color and pattern they would like for their suit.

Sports Page / Inside Edge
Both the Sports Page and Inside Edge sell Nordic skis, clothing, and equipment. Be sure to tell them you race for the Queensbury Nordic team, as high school racers receive a discount.

School Provided Gear
Waxes -
The school provides all waxes and waxing equipment. Skiers will be taught how to wax and prepare their skis early on in the season. The day before each race all team members will wax skis in the Nordic ski basement of the High School (The Dungeon).

Proper Practice Clothing

Skiers should dress using layers. Clothing should be fairly tight but allow for a lot of movement. Be sure that clothing is polypro, nylon, or some other type of synthetic material (avoid cotton!). Cotton is not a good material to ski/train in, as it does not retain heat after becoming wet and becomes heavy and bulky.

Lower body -
1) Base layer
- Long underwear/tights
2) Mid layer
- Spandex uniform bottom (if race day)
3) Outer layer
- Nordic ski warm up pants / running pants. Swix and Craft make very good outer layer warm up pants and jackets. These can be quite expensive, but they do last a very long time.

Upper body -
1) Base layer
- Polypro / nylon shirts. First layer shirt should be thin and tight fitting (ex -under armer). Second layer should be thicker to provide insulation.
2) Spandex uniform top (if race day)
3) Outer layer
- Warm up jacket that allows for lots of movement (school provided) and that is not bulky. Again, brands such as Swix and Craft make quality outer layer jackets if skiers decide to purchase these.
4) Hats, wool socks, and Nordic ski gloves (Craft gloves, Toko gloves Swix, etc...)

Other -
- Water bottle
- Water bottle holder (optional)

- Running shoes for dryland training
